✝️𖢗 How was the goddess Ishtar invoked in Syriac tradition?
Around the 6th or 7th century AD, an incantation bowl was commissioned and created, now housed in the National Museum of Finland. Within the bowl, the owner invokes protection from the goddess Ishtar, as she was considered a demon in the Syriac tradition. Despite the restyling of the goddess Ishtar as a demon, her image shows that she was clearly remembered as a figure after the Christianization of Assyrians, and this specific tradition is not found amongst any other Christian communities in the area. ✝️🇵🇸𖢗 How does a Christian Palestinian text affirm Assyrian continuity?
From as far back as 2022, a Christian Palestinian Aramaic text from the 10th-11th centuries was fully digitized. Christian Palestinian Aramaic was a Western Aramaic dialect only used by Melkites. Writing in Syriac, these Melkites translated the Bible using Asuraya and Suraya as synonyms, as well as Suray and Suryaye where Assyria would usually be mentioned. These findings are significant as they come from native sources, and show that among not only Melkites, but in the general Syriac tradition, these terms were interchangeable. 📖 Suraye Educational Collective has just archived a book about Tel Keppe!
In 1937, Yousif Hermez Jammo, the father of the late Sarhad Jammo, published a book titled “The Ruins of Nineveh or the History of Telkaif.” The book received a reprint in 1993, which was received by SEC and has now been uploaded in full to the Internet Archive! The link to access the book is in our Linktree, in bio!
‼️IMPORTANT NOTE: It has been alleged that the reprint removed information written by the original author about Tel Keppe’s connection to ancient Assyria. At this time, we have not confirmed these reports, but we will send a follow-up when we hear more.
🗳️POLL: Are you excited to read this book for the first time?

✝️ 𖢗 Learn about the legend of Mor Behnam and his sister Sarah!
In the West Syriac rite is the Legend of Mor Behnam, believed to have taken place in the 4th century AD. According to the legend, Behnam was the son of the Magian king of Assyria, Sennacherib; he converts to Christianity after a monk cures his sister Sarah of her ailments, but both are then killed by the King Sennacherib. The story is confusing and is likely to be erroneous in some of its historical claims. However, the focus is to show how Syriac Christians interpreted their origins and past, claiming to be Assyrians and recasting their ancient king as a persecutor who later turned to the truth. ✝️ 𖢗 What is the connection with Mar Awgin and King Sennacherib?
Mar Awgin is a saint commemorated in both the East and West Syriac rites. Within his acts, Mar Awgin is said to have gone to the city of Sarguga (modern-day Sirnak) where he met Assyrians from the time of Sennacherib. Although this appears to be Biblically influenced, these retellings show that the Suryaye in Mesopotamia claimed Assyrian descent and used Assyrians in an ethnic sense.
